Jonah Maiava
In this adventure, Jonah is 34 years old and his interests are fishing, the outside and inventing new recipes.
Jonah was born in New Zealand, but raised in Hawaii by his maternal grandmother. As a young man, he traveled back to his home country to serve in the army. His strength and almost preternatural ability to detect danger made him a popular member of his unit. And his ability to prepare and cook almost anything didn’t hurt either.
After sustaining injuries in the line of duty, Jonah was honorably discharged and went to work as a chef in his sister’s café in Ngapuhi. While in New Zealand, Roth encountered Jonah dockside carrying four crates of seafood at once. Impressed by his strength (and later his cooking), Roth offered him a place on the Endurance.
After the Yamatai incident, Jonah accompanies Lara on her adventures and they attempt to dismantle the existing Trinity cells.
Abigaile Ortiz
Abigaile “Abby” is the mayor of Kuwaq Yaku, a remote village in Peru, as well as a skilled mechanic and pilot. She is descended from the Incas who live in the area.
When Lara and Jonah arrive at Kuwaq Yaku, looking for some Mayan ruins, they meet her, and after asking her about the ruins, she laughs and tells them they won’t find any, as the Mayans are not from Peru, although she points Lara in the right direction.
Abby soon hits it off with Jonah, which leads them to start a romance and they decide to spend some time together to get to know each other better.
Richard Croft
Richard Croft was born into the wealthy Croft family. He studied archaeology at Oxford University and travelled widely to further his research, eventually earning his PhD and publishing several books. He was quite successful, but his theories were often ridiculed by his detractors.
While researching in the library, he met Amelia de Mornay, and was captivated by her quick wit. Amelia was betrothed to the Earl of Farringdon, though she had no interest in continuing the relationship and broke it off to be with Richard. When he met Amelia’s parents and brother, Atlas, they treated him with barely concealed contempt, though Richard took their antipathy in stride for Amelia’s sake.
Richard was overjoyed after Lara’s birth, the birth was difficult.
Richard was impressed by Roth’s skill and willingness to bend certain laws in the interest of his work. When they first met, Roth tried to teach Richard to shoot, but abandoned these lessons when he showed no progress.
Over the next few years, Richard had a very successful career, publishing several books. However, tragedy struck the Croft family when his beloved wife’s plane crashed in Tibet. Richard found the crash site, Amelia’s body, and beside her were several handwritten letters to him and Lara. Richard was devastated by the loss of his wife, and began researching rituals for resurrection. Roth begged him not to do it for fear of how he might act if it didn’t work, but he ignored him and performed the ritual without success.
Defeated, Richard had Amelia buried in the Croft family crypt in an elaborate sarcophagus.
One day, The Trinity was closely following Richard’s progress on the Divine Source and the Key of Chak Chel. When they saw that the archaeologist could make his findings public, they decided to orchestrate his death in a way that would make it look like a suicide.
Pedro Domínguez, leader of the Trinity Council, ordered Ana to kill Richard, she was an infiltrated spy for the organisation, but the woman had fallen in love with Richard and could not do it. The Trinity sent another agent and successfully completed the mission. Lara, barely 11 years old, found her father’s body in his office after hearing the shot he had allegedly fired into his head.
Amelia Croft
Amelia was engaged to marry the Earl of Farringdon, as part of an arranged marriage, as her parents and her brother Atlas insisted that she had a position to maintain.
Amelia went to Oxford University to study art history. At one point, she was studying in the library, where she met Richard Croft, and where they shared their research.
The couple began a relationship, much to the chagrin of her family. When she took Richard to meet them, they showed her cold disinterest and contempt, as they considered him a madman, like the rest of the world. However, she no longer cared about her family’s wishes and broke off her engagement to the Earl of Farringdon.
Some time later, Amelia and Richard broke up, due to his constant obsession with her research, although he went after her and the two reconciled. Amelia moved in with Richard at Croft Manor.
Richard proposed to Amelia in Luxor, Egypt, to which Amelia accepted without hesitation, deciding that she wanted Richard’s passion in her life every day. Amelia was willing to relegate her painting to a mere hobby, though Richard would not allow it, and had a studio built for Amelia in the west wing of Croft Manor, for her delight. Later, Amelia told Richard that she was pregnant, and he was overjoyed at the news.
Amelia spent the next few years happily working from home, until one day, while Richard was on his way to Tibet in search of a monastery, Amelia received a letter of acceptance to visit a gallery with his work. She was confused, knowing that her husband would be heartbroken, as the tour would require him to be away for over a year. She decided to postpone her decision for a while until after Richard’s discovery.
In the end, she chose to join her husband in Tibet, but Amelia’s plane crashed in the mountains. Amelia spent her last hours writing two letters, one to Richard and one to Lara. Shortly afterwards, Amelia died of cold.
Unuratu
Unuratu married Sayri, the king of Paititi, and bore him a son, Etzli. At the wedding she gave him the bow of her ancestors as a symbol of the union of the two families. When Sayri died while foraging for food on the outskirts of Paititi during a terrible famine, Unuratu was crowned queen of Paititi, and named Uchu as Etzli’s surrogate father.
However, instead of continuing as before and allowing the Cult of Kukulkan to rule the city while she became a mere figurehead, she spoke out against the Cult at her coronation.
After Unuratu’s act of insubordination, Amaru (Pedro Dominguez, Sayri’s brother) and the Cult openly took control of Paititi. Although Unuratu was still queen and Etzli would one day inherit the throne, she was powerless when the Cult brought food through the Trinity, ending the famine.
Although Amaru and the Cult enjoyed the admiration of much of the public, a faction of Paititians remained loyal to Unuratu and became the base of the Paititi Rebels.
Etzli
Etzli is the son of Unuratu and his late father Sayri, the future heir to the throne of Paititi. He is quite stubborn and often disobeyed his mother by taking unnecessary risks, although he is also a great joker.
Pedro Dominguez
The man who would become known as Pedro Dominguez was born as Amaru in the hidden city of Paititi in the 1960s. He was the older brother of Sayri, who became king of Paititi.
While still a child, Amaru fell into the Cult of Kukulkan, a Trinity proxy who had manipulated the rulers of Paititi since 1603 A.D., and was eventually taken from the city to the outside world. Cardinal Gualtiero de Luca Dominguez, then leader of the High Council of the Trinity, took a liking to Amaru and personally educated the boy as his successor. Amaru took the name Pedro Dominguez, studied to become a Doctor of Archaeology and worked his way up through the ranks of the Trinity until he was appointed leader of the High Council and of the order itself.
Fearing for the safety of his people, Dominguez sent agent Ana de Trinidad to seduce Croft and try to lure him away from his job. Failing, Dominguez ordered Ana to kill Croft, but by then she had developed real feelings for him and refused.
After the death of his brother, Sayri, Dominguez violently usurped control of the Cult of Kukulkan, unwilling to allow outsiders to rule Paititi. He firmly believes that the end justifies the means when it comes to protecting Paititi, sacrificing the rebels and even ordering the death of Richard Croft when he could not convince him to abandon his research on Paititi, although he would later admit that Croft’s death was regrettable.
Rourke
Rourke was a highly decorated US Special Forces soldier with an unblemished record of successful operations around the world. The Trinity approached Rourke to recruit him as the leader of its military forces based solely on his reputation. In his new position, Rourke answered only to the Trinity High Council and served as second-in-command to Dr. Pedro Dominguez, although he did not always agree with his orders, the two developed a mutual respect.
Rourke was in contact with Konstantin during the search for the Divine Source and also travelled to Cozumel, Mexico, together with Dr. Dominguez.
