28. Tulun, Citadel, Trenches (2)
PREVIOUSLY ON “LARA’S ADVENTURES IN CAIRO”: If you’ve been following this walkthrough, you have already passed through this level twice. The first time you trapped or killed the Minotaur in order to reach the entrance to the CITADEL GATE. After obtaining the NITROUS OXIDE CANISTER in the CITADEL GATE, you passed through the CHAMBERS OF TULUN a second time in order to get the motorcycle and drive it into the TRENCHES. In that level you obtained the WEAPON CODE KEY and VALVE PIPE. Then you combined the NITROUS OXIDE CANISTER and VALVE PIPE to make the NITROUS OXIDE FEEDER, and attached it to the motorcycle in order to give it a turbo boost. Now you have returned to the CHAMBERS OF TULUN a third time. If you missed any of these crucial items, check the CAIRO OVERVIEW and revisiting earlier levels.
PREVIOUSLY UNREACHABLE AREA IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER: Now that your motorcycle has the nitro upgrade, you will be able to go much faster and jump much farther. From the back entrance to the CHAMBERS, turn left and drive around the building toward the deep pit, but do not jump across the pit at this time. Instead make a U-turn. Line up the motorcycle facing the right side of the broken staircase. Drive up the stairs and hold Sprint/Dash to activate the nitro. This will allow you to make that long jump into the opening in the top right corner of the building, which would have been impossible before.
Dismount and climb into the doorway on the left. Then turn right and enter the building through the yellow-and-white door, which is now open. Take out the soldier waiting inside. Continue forward and slide down the ramp.
ROOM WITH RED SPRINKLER HEADS AND CONVEYOR: Go straight through this room into the short passageway opposite the ramp. Turn right and kill another soldier guarding a small room with a couple of storage crates. Pick up the WOODEN TORCH on the floor in the back left corner. Then return to the room at the bottom of the ramp. The yellow-and-white door up on the ledge does not open yet, so head down down the slightly less steep ramp just to the right of the one where you entered.
Just before you reach the second landing, press the Draw Weapons key twice to toss the torch down onto the landing and pull out your guns. Then round the corner and kill the soldier who approaches from the next room. Retrieve the torch from the landing and go through the doorway where the last soldier emerged. Ignore the ladder on the right, which leads back up to the street. Instead go into the short passageway on the left. Drop the torch here and press Action to kick open the gray door. Draw weapons and run inside and around to the left to take out another soldier. Retrieve the torch and light it on the flaming sconce mounted on the wall.
NOTE: If you explored this area on your first pass through this level, the gray door will already be open and the soldier dead. However, none of the yellow-and-white doors opened at that time, so you’ll still need to deal with the other soldiers and do the business with the torch.
Carry the lit torch up the ramps to the ROOM WITH RED SPRINKLER HEADS AND CONVEYOR. Go up the ramp on the east side of the room to the ledge below the sprinklers. Stand beneath the first sprinkler head and press Action to use the lit torch to set off the sprinklers. This also opens the remaining yellow-and-white doors. Drop the torch (you won’t need it again) and go through the door between the sprinklers. Follow the passageway forward and left, then use the lever.
Cutscene: The conveyor starts up, hooking a storage crate and depositing it in the next room.
NOTE: Setting off the sprinklers also opens the last yellow-and-white door in the area at the bottom of the ramps where you lit the torch, but there’s nothing there.
Return through the SPRINKLER ROOM to the room to the north, where you found the torch earlier. The crate that came in on the conveyor is now stacked on top of one of the others. Climb on top of these crates and take a running jump to grab the high ledge. Pull up and drop down into the next room.
STORAGE ROOM: All but two of the storage crates can be broken by shooting them. (Crouch to hit the smaller ones.) Inside you’ll find a small medipack, normal arrows, and wideshot shells. Shoot the padlock on the barred door to break it. If you stand on the low step near the door and crouch, you can use pistols. Reach into the niche in the barred alcove to get the ROOF KEY.
Climb back over the wall into the room with the stacked crates. Follow the passageway back to the SPRINKLER ROOM. Climb onto the ledge near the sprinklers. Then exit through the yellow-and-white doors onto a ledge overlooking the street. Turn left here to get back to the motorcycle.
NOTE: If you accidentally drop off the ledge into the street before getting the motorcycle, you can climb back into the building through the opening at the lower left. Then climb down the ladder into the area where you lit the torch and follow the ramps back up to the SPRINKLER ROOM.
Drive the bike back over the sloped ledge to the street. If you brake on the way down, you can avoid taking damage, but don’t worry if you do. When you change levels, Lara’s health will reset.
Now that you have the nitro boost for the motorcycle, you can reach the second secret in the CITY OF THE DEAD. To get back there, follow the street to the south, jumping the bike across the deep pit on the left side. Then continue around to the south side of the CHAMBERS. Turn left and ride up the hill to re-enter the CITY OF THE DEAD.
REVISITING THE CHAMBERS OF TULUN: You will return to TULUN once more before completing the Cairo section. This is covered during the CITY OF THE DEAD (revisit).
You re-enter this level from the CHAMBERS OF TULUN after collecting the ROOF KEY. If you haven’t done this yet, don’t worry. You’ll pass through that level again on the way back to the TRENCHES.
STREET AND DEEP PIT TO THE NORTHWEST: As you come down the hill from the CHAMBERS OF TULUN, turn left and go through the iron gate. Then turn right and follow the street to the west. This is where you disabled the automatic machine guns on your first visit to this level. Stop near the alcove in the right (north) wall and leave the bike here for now.
NOTE: If you missed the GRENADE GUN and small medipack in the alcove, you can get them now. These items are counted in the first visit walkthrough.
If you followed the walkthrough and didn’t explore this area on your first pass through this level, you’ll meet a sniper standing on a ledge on the left side of the street, a bit farther to the west. You can run at him with guns blazing if you prefer. Or, approach cautiously, staying close to the left wall, to trigger his appearance. Then move behind the wall as soon as he starts shooting. Retreat along the street a bit more, then step out to the right until you can see him but he can’t target Lara. Shoot him in the leg using the revolver + laser sight or just run at him guns blazing if you prefer. Then get back on the motorcycle and drive down the hill past the sniper’s ledge. Turn right and run over another soldier just around the corner, but take care not to drive on into the very deep pit at the top of the next slope.
JUMPING THE MOTORCYCLE ACROSS THE DEEP PIT: Position the bike for a long run-up on the left side of the hill. Hold Action along with Sprint/Dash to activate the nitro for the extra power needed to jump across the pit. On the other side, turn right and run over a third soldier. Then stop and and dismount.
NOTE: If you don’t yet have the NITROUS OXIDE FEEDER attached to the motorcycle, then you missed something earlier.
RUINED BUILDING WITH ANGLED BLOCKS – SECRET #2: Climb onto the ledge with the short, brown pillars. Hop down into the depression between the larger, angled blocks. Go around behind the first block on the left and turn to face it. Jump straight up to grab the lower edge of this block. Try to position Lara so she’s hanging from the middle of the block or just slightly to the left of center, otherwise the next sequence won’t work. Pull up and quickly press and hold both Jump and Action to backflip onto the angled block behind, spring off that block onto the next one, then jump forward and grab the edge of the opening in the wall ahead. Pull up onto the ledge and hop down into the area below for SECRET #2 (59/70): super grenades, a large medipack, and explosive arrows.
Climb back onto the ledge where you entered the secret area. Then, to get down without injury, take a standing jump and hold Action to land on the slope ahead, slide back, and grab the edge. Let go and drop to the ground. Then go around to the right, between the columns, climb out of the sunken area, and return to the motorcycle.
BACK TO THE START: Jump the motorcycle back across the very deep pit using the steep slope on the left side of the pit as a ramp. Be sure to back up all the way to the wall before you start and use the nitro (Sprint/Dash) like you did before.
On the other side of the pit, head up the hill to the left. Then follow the street to the iron gate in the northeast corner of the level. Drive through the gate and up the hill into the CHAMBERS OF TULUN.
CHAMBERS OF TULUN – JUST PASSING THROUGH: Drive down the hill and turn right. Follow the road around the right (east) side of the CHAMBERS, using the motorcycle to jump the deep pit on the left side.
If you haven’t already done so, you might want to pick up the ROOF KEY while you’re in this area. It’s not crucial but it will be useful when you return to the TRENCHES. The CHAMBERS OF TULUN (revisit) walkthrough explains how to obtain this key. When you’re finished here, follow the road to the north to return to the TRENCHES.
You return to the TRENCHES after obtaining the ROOF KEY in the CHAMBERS OF TULUN (revisit) and the second secret in the CITY OF THE DEAD (revisit), both of which require the nitro upgrade for the motorcycle. If you don’t have this upgrade yet, check the TRENCHES (first visit) walkthrough and the CAIRO OVERVIEW for details.
STREET WITH THE PALM TREE (again): As you re-enter the TRENCHES from the CHAMBERS OF TULUN, turn right, park the motorcycle anywhere in this starting area, and dismount. Face the large palm tree to the east and look for the gray concrete bracket jutting out from the building to the left of the tree. Use the crossbow or revolver + laser sight to target this bracket. One normal arrow will destroy it. Later, you’ll climb along the crevice where the bracket was.
Now, go under the pointed archway to the north and up the wide staircase. At the top of these stairs are alcoves on the left and right. Climb into the alcove on the left, turn left, and drop into a shallow depression to find a large medipack. Climb back up, cross to the other side of the street, climb into the alcove there, and turn around. There’s a sniper on the opposite rooftop (above where you got the medipack). You can take him out from here or wait until you get up on the ROOFTOPS.
CLIMBING TO THE ROOFTOPS: Open the trapdoor above the lower part of this alcove by standing at the edge, facing the handle, and jumping straight up to grab it. Pull up into the crawlspace on the left, crawl through, and drop into the small room beyond. Pick up a quiver of poisoned arrows. Continue through the next crawlspace to an opening above the STREET WITH THE PALM TREE.
If you didn’t do so earlier, you’ll need to destroy the concrete bracket obstructing the crevice in order to progress. To do this, turn right, crawl up the ramp a little ways, draw pistols while crouching, and shoot the bracket. Then crawl backwards to the edge, hang, and traverse to the left along the sloping crevice. (This isn’t possible without first destroying the obstacle.) Continue around the next two corners and drop onto the ledge.
ROOFTOPS: Now you’re headed for the building across the street via the overhead bars. To avoid a swarm of locusts, stand at the edge of the ledge and jump forward to grab the bars, rather than just jumping straight up. This should prevent the swarm from spawning. (If you do encounter the locusts while monkey swinging, try saving and reloading to eliminate them. Just remember to hold Action while the game loads so Lara doesn’t fall.)
Enter the next room cautiously so you’re not ambushed by the soldier inside on the left. He drops a small medipack when you kill him. Go around to the right (left if you’re facing the entrance from inside the room) and use the ROOF KEY to unlock the double doors. There is no visible lock, but if you stand facing the middle of the doors and press Action, you’ll be prompted to use the key. Go through the red-lit doorway to another ledge above the street.
NOTE: If you missed the ROOF KEY and don’t want to go all the way back to the CHAMBERS OF TULUN to get it, you can instead take a running jump from the ledge on the north side of the monkey bars to grab the sill of the red-lit doorway. Pull up and turn around. This is also useful if you want to avoid the locusts and the soldier guarding the door.
Take a running jump to grab the horizontal crevice on the next building to the north. (Aim for the right end, where there’s no overhang.) Traverse to the left until you can pull up. Go around the corner to the right and climb onto a block ledge near a small, rectangular opening through which you can peer out onto the rooftops. If you didn’t kill that sniper earlier from below, he may start shooting at Lara through the opening, and you’ll need to take care of him.
Look through the opening and locate the electrical box across the street. Use the crossbow fitted with the laser sight to aim at the red light above the box. One normal arrow should be enough. Or, you can use the pistols. Lara won’t auto-aim, so you’ll have to stand near the opening and tweak Lara’s angle bit by bit until you’re shooting in the right direction. The box doesn’t explode, and the light doesn’t go out, so it’s hard to tell if you’ve actually done anything. But when the box starts to smoke, you’ll know you’ve disabled it. Doing so opens the big door below and to the left of the box. Return to the ledge where you pulled up, and safety drop to the street in the starting area.
NOTE: The cutscene that shows the big door opening does not seem to want to play, at least in the PC version. I tried it with various different weapons, with and without holding Look. Get up on the roof and shot the box with pistols at close range. In the cutscene, it shows the door opening.
TWO STAIRWAYS AND LONG JUMP TO STREET BAZAAR ENTRANCE: Get back on the motorcycle and drive around the corner to the northwest. Ahead are two sets of stairs leading up to the north. To clear the area, first drive up the stairs on the left. Run over a soldier at the top and continue through the doorway and down the hill, running over another soldier at the bottom.
Notice the huge pile of sand on the ledge above where that second soldier fell. At the top of the pile is a ladder, which leads to the level exit. It’s difficult to reach the ladder on foot since the sand pile is so steep. (If you want to try it, see the note below.) You can make it on the motorcycle now that you have the nitro upgrade and have opened the big door by shooting the electrical box. Start by riding back up the slope and down the staircase the way you just came. Continue up the next hill but not all the way back to the starting area. Turn around and position the motorcycle facing the left side of the right staircase. This will give you a long, straight run-up to the doorway. Hold Action and Sprint/Dash to activate the nitro boost and race forward up the stairs, through the open door, up onto the sloping ledge directly ahead, and off the other side, landing on top of the big sand pile.
IMPORTANT: Later you will return to this area through the small, metal door in the corner. Do not park the motorcycle in front of this door or you may have trouble getting through. Also, It is possible to climb to the top of the sand pile on foot, but since you’ll need the motorcycle to continue from here later, I recommend making the jump onto the sand pile now.
Once you reach the top of the sand pile, climb the ladder and follow the passageway to the STREET BAZAAR.
